Ethyl Cyanoacrylates : Surface Insensitive Instant Adhesives

Ethyl cyanoacrylates  is  one of the most popular instant adhesives that used within industries. It is a clear colourless liquid with strong pungent odour. It is readily to react with weak bases (for example  hydroxide ion in water )  to form hard and brittle plastic and bonding two substrates at the same time.

Ethyl cyanoacylates' bonding  exhibit higher elasticity  compared to that of methyl cyanoacylates. This inherent properties could be due to the larger size of the ethyl cyanoacrylate molecules which yield less anchoring points  between each other during the process of polymerization / bonding.

The longer the carbon chain ( of alcohol that involved in the reaction) is, the lesser polarity a cynoacrylate would be. Ethyl cyanoacrylate is found to be less polar than methyl cyanoacrylate, therefore, it wets plastic substrates more readily which makes it a better plastic bonder compared to the later.

Besides, ethyl cyanoacrylates are surface insensitive, and exhibit good bonding performance on woods, elastomers, metals, ceramics, and many other substrates including that of with acidic surface.

Tips & Tricks:

1. The thinner the cyanoacrylate film, the faster and stronger the bonding.
2. Cyanoacrylate adhesives form strong bonds to skin in seconds.
3. Do not attempt to force bonded skin / tissues apart. Immerse in soapy water aids the bond to break.
4. Clean-up can be done using  highly polar solvents; cyanoacrylates are soluble in methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, acetone, N,N-dimethylformamide, and nitromethane.
5. Acetone may be  a component found in nail polish removers -- a convenient source of your cured cyanoacrylate remover.
6. Though ethyl cyanoacrylate is known as good  plastic bonder, an activator consists of weak base is essential as adhesion promoter for bonding  low surface energy plastics -- polypropylene, polyethylene, teflon.
7.It is advisable to use cyanoacrylate adhesives in workplaces with adequate ventilation. Cyanoacrylate vapour is found to heavier than air. An exhaust intake performs better fume removal  if placed below work area.
